L'Atrachjata Hotel

Located on a hillock in the heart of the Eastern Plain, the Costa Serena, at the crossroads between Bastia, Corte and Porto-Vecchio, Aléria draws most of its resources from intensive fruit and wine growing and from tourism. The city is located in the immediate vicinity of the mouth of the Tavignano, the second largest river in Corsica, and the pond of Diana, the main shellfish farming centre of the island (the Oysters of Diana).

The city of Aleria was founded in the 6th century BC on the eastern coast of Corsica. Its location facing the Latin coast made it the chief town of Roman Corsica and a prosperous ancient city, the remains of which are now a major archaeological site. Decimated over the centuries by barbarian incursions and malaria, Aléria played a notorious role in the history of Corsica as an episcopal seat in the Middle Ages and then as a centre of opposition to the paolists in the 17th century (symbolised by the fort of Matra). Finally, on August 22, 1975, it was the scene of the Aléria events, the founding act of contemporary Corsican nationalism.
